The J.I. Segal Awards were established in 1968 by the late Dr. Hirsch and Dvora Rosenfeld in memory of renowned Yiddish-Canadian poet, Jacob Isaac Segal (1896-1954). Presented every two years, they honor creative literary and film works on Jewish themes and recognize contributions in Jewish education.

The awards will be presented on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 7:30 pm at the Jewish Public Library, 5151 Côte Ste-Catherine Road, Montreal, Canada.

On July 9, 2018, the Yiddish artistic singing workshop, founded by the late Nechama Lifshitz, will celebrate its 20th anniversary at the Tzavta hall (located at Ibn Gvirol St. 30, Tel Aviv), at 7:30 p.m.

For four years running, the National Authority for Yiddish Culture has been granting fellowships to students at Israeli universities whose M.A., Ph.D. or post-doctoral research focuses on Yiddish language and culture. Once complete, the Authority publishes their theses and dissertations.

Most recently, the Authority supported the doctoral dissertation of Esti Nissim at Tel Aviv University. The subject is: "Interrelations of space, self-consciousness and sex in Avrom Goldfaden's plays."

The dissertation has an appendix: the full Yiddish text of Goldfaden's play, "Ben ami, oder der zun fun mayn folk" ("The Son of my People.")

On August 1, 2018, the film "Black Honey, The Life and Poetry of Avraham Sutskever," directed by Uri Barabash, will be screened at the Jerusalem Film Festival.

Barabash tells the story of Avraham (Avrom) Sutskever (1913-2010), one of the greatest Yiddish poets of all time.

On June 21, 2018, the 22th annual Yiddish Choir Festival took place at the Ashkelon Congress Center.

Dozens of musical groups from all over Israel, including children's choirs, participated in the festival.

The event was produced by Michael Leinwand (who also accompanied the singers on the piano) and sponsored by the National Authority for Yiddish Culture.

During the summer of 2018, numerous courses in Yiddish language and culture will be offered throughout the world. 

Courses will take place in Tel AvivVilnius, Warsaw, Weimar, ParisLondon, New York CityAmherst (Massachusetts), as well as in Ashokan (Catskills, New York State).

                                          

On June 5, 2018, a memorial rally took place at Pinkas St. 63 in Tel Aviv at 7:30 p.m. to mark the 70th anniversary of the assassination of renown Yiddish actor Solomon Mikhoels (Shloyme Vovsi) at the hands of Stalin's agents. See also details in Hebrew.
