On Thursday, February 9, 2017, the "Golden Peacock" (Di Goldene Pave in Yiddish) ensemble will perform at the Ginot Ha'ir community center, located at Emek Refaim St. 12 in Jerusalem, at 8 p.m.

The trio consists of Chaya Livni on violin, Aryeh Burstein as tenor, and Eyal Bat on piano as well as composition and musical arrangements.

In January and February 2017, the National Authority for Yiddish Culture will be holding several performances in cooperation with Amcha, the Israeli center for psychological and social support for Holocaust survivors and the second generation.

Yiddish musical concerts will take place in the following Amcha clubs:

- on January 15 in Rishon LeZion, with singer Jenny Feierman;

- on January 18 in Ramat Gan, with singer Itzik Sharoni;

- on February 15 in Holion, with singer Shmulik Nadel.

On January 11, 2017, theater expert Carol Feldman spoke on "140 Years of Yiddish Theater History and Its Founder Father Abraham Goldfaden"  at the Israeli branch of the Arbeter Ring (Workmen's Circle), in Tel Aviv.

The singer Tzvika Goldberg also performed, accompanied by pianist Misha Blecherovich. The event was sponsored by the National Authority for Yiddish Culture. 

On January 6, 2017, prolific Israeli actress Lia Koenig will read in Yiddish from the stories of Nobel laureate Shmuel Yosef Agnon. The performance, sponsored by the National Authority for Yiddish Culture, will take place at Sholom-Aleichem House, located at Berkovitch St. 2, Tel Aviv, at 11 a.m.

The National Authority for Yiddish Culture congratulates the Yiddish scholar and educator Professor Abraham Novershtern from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (who is also the director of the Sholom Aleichem House in Tel Aviv) for winning the Landau Prize for the Sciences and Research.

On December 8, 2016, Asaf Galay presented a wonderful program at the Library of Congress titled “If the Dead Could Speak - the Jewish Cemetery of Warsaw”. The program was co-sponsored by the European Division, Embassy of Israel, and by the Library of Congress Professional Association. The presentation was a combination of film clips, lecture and a question and answer session. The National Authority for Yiddish Culture supported the production of the film.

 

On Wednesday, December 7, 2016, actor, singer and translator Ruth Levin launched her new album of poems and songs for children, "Tzigele-Migele," with a performance at the Yung Yiddish cultural center (Yermiyahu St. 52, Jerusalem). She was accompanied by the pianist Chaim Tukchinsky.

The Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary, edited by Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath and Paul Glasser (see the photo), has been issued in 2016 by Indiana University Press publishers.

Containing 856 large-format pages, nearly 50,000 entries and 33,000 subentries, this book emphasizes Yiddish as a living language that is spoken in many places around the world. The late Mordkhe Schaechter collected and researched spoken and literary Yiddish in all its varieties and this landmark dictionary reflects his vision for present-day and future Yiddish usage.

A collection of poems, Ongetzoygene Strune (Strained String) by Dov-Ber Kerler, was added to the Library of Modern Yiddish Literature in 2016 thanks to a contribution by the National Authority for Yiddish Culture.

The poet's pen name is Boris Karlov. The new book was designed and illustrated by Moshe Himeyn. The complete text is available here.

On October 18-21, 2016 Yiddish arts activities and events for all ages took place at the Yiddishkeit Sukkah near the old Tel Aviv Port (Namal), including a children's studio for drawing greeting cards.
